Future Support
Short vs Long Term Homecare Medical Beds
Short term use (1 month - 1.5 years)
- Duration: Typically 1–4 months (e.g., post-surgery, broken hip, or short-term rehab).
- Primary Goal: To provide a safe, elevated surface for medical procedures and to assist with getting in and out of bed during a temporary mobility dip.
- Common Bed Choice: Standard Full Electric or even Semi-Electric. Since the need is temporary, homeowners often prioritize basic functionality and lower cost.
- Mattress Choice: Usually a ARUBA-200 or ALX Foam Mattress Basic is sufficient for short-term use. Use MER-SAPM53 Low Air Loss for short term APM mattress use.
Long term use (Immediate - 10 Years)
- Duration: 5 months to 10+ years (e.g., aging seniors, ALS, MS, dementia, paralysis, etc.).
- Primary Goal: Preventing secondary complications like Decubitus Ulcers (bedsores) and reducing the physical & mental toll on caregivers.
- Common Bed Choice: Low Beds (for fall risk) or Auto-Rotating Beds. These specialized beds offer "Independence" features that standard beds do not.
- Mattress Choice: High-end Pressure Relief mattresses (Gel, Memory Foam, or Low Air Loss / Alternating Air w/ foam) are essential to prevent skin breakdown over years of use. Decubitus Ulcers are one of the major issues we face when dealing with long-term care patients who are in bed all day.
Hospital / Homecare Medical Bed FAQs
Homecare beds typically come in a few types:
- Semi-Electric Beds: Head and foot sections adjust electrically, but height is still manual.
- Full Electric Beds: All adjustments—head, foot, and bed height—are managed electrically with a remote. This is by far the most popular choice for ease of use for both the patient and caregiver. Brands like Drive Medical and Medline offer reliable full-electric options.
- Premium Homecare: Features such as Zero Gravity, Heat/Massage, Chair Position, Auto Rotation, Low to Floor, Modern Aesthetics, and overall better build quality and warranty. Select bed models handbuilt in USA and Germany (Med-Mizer and Wissner Bosserhoff)
- Rotating Beds: Med-mizer Active Care Bed auto rotates you into a near standing position, as well as a chair position for tv, reading, naps, and daily tasks.
- Bariatric Beds: Beds with 48" width, 84" length, steel reinforced frames, and a heavy duty motor.
NOTE - WE ONLY SELL FULL ELECTRIC HOMECARE HOSPITAL BEDS
The primary difference lies in adjustability and functionality.
Unlike a standard bed, homecare beds are designed for medical needs. They allow for easy adjustment of the head and foot sections, and often the overall bed height, using electric controls.
This helps with positioning, patient comfort, circulation, and ease of care for caregivers. Regular beds offer static support, while medical beds are dynamic.
The primary difference lies in power adjustability in the raising and lowering of the homecare bed. Full Electric you control the raising and lowering, whereas semi electric, you get down and have to manually crank the bed.
Our Full Electric Bed allows for easy adjustment of the head and foot sections, and often the overall bed height, using electric controls.
Note: Medicare, Medicaid, and other insurances almost always cover the semi-electric homecare bed. Many of our customers upgrade to full electric once hearing this news.
For more complex needs, there are advanced medical beds available.
