How to fold and unfold Jazzy® Folding Power Wheelchairs ( Jazzy®Carbon, 27, 27x, Carbon HD and Jazzy®Ultral Light)

At Cleveland HME, we know that portability is the key to an active lifestyle in Northeast Ohio. Whether you are packing up your chair for a flight out of CLE or loading it into your trunk for a trip to the Metroparks, knowing exactly how your model folds saves your back and protects your investment.

Here is your professional guide to mastering the mechanisms of our lightweight, premium folding power chair lineup.

1. The "Vertical-Fold" Family: Jazzy® 27, Jazzy® Carbon, & Rascal Cruiser

These models feature a streamlined, flat-folding mechanism similar to the Golden Cricket or Quickie Q50R. They collapse front-to-back into a completely flat profile.

To Fold:

  1. Turn the power OFF and flip up the center footplate.
  2. Stand behind the chair and locate the release latch on the back of the frame (just below the seat backrest).
  3. Release the latch, then pull the backrest forward toward the front wheels.
  4. Push the seat and backrest tightly together until you hear an audible "click"—this means the unit is locked securely in its folded shape. Secure the integrated travel strap.

To Unfold:

  1. Release the security strap and locate the safety lock latch on the underside of the frame.
  2. Disengage the latch and pull the backrest upward and away from the seat pan.
  3. Continue pulling back until you hear a solid "click," indicating the chair is fully locked in the driving position.

2. The Jazzy® 27X: Ergonomic "X-Frame" Folding

The 27X utilizes a unique vertical X-frame design, folding side-to-side exactly like a traditional manual wheelchair. This is the top choice for users who prefer to stand upright while loading the chair.

To Fold:

  1. Flip up both footplates and drop down the collapsible rear attendant handles.
  2. Reach down and firmly pull upward on the two handles integrated directly into the center of the seat upholstery.
  3. The sides of the chair will collapse inward toward each other. Use the frame latch to lock the sides together.

To Unfold:

  1. Undo the frame storage latch.
  2. Place both hands flat on the outer seat rails and push down firmly.
  3. The X-frame will snap completely open. Always verify both seat rails are fully leveled before sitting down.

3. Jazzy® Ultralight (33 lbs)

This premium, ultra-lightweight carbon fiber model uses a dedicated quick-release lever system positioned specifically on the frame for effortless, rapid transitions.

  • To Unfold:

    1. Stand on the left side of the folded chair.

    2. Locate the bright red lever release on the left-hand side of the frame.

    3. Engage the red lever to disengage the safety lock, then push outward on the armrests and seat rails until the frame clicks open and locks into an upright driving position.

  • To Fold:

    1. Engage the red lever on the left side to release the frame tension.

    2. Pull the seat rails up and inward toward the center to collapse the unit into its lightweight travel state.

4. Jazzy® Carbon HD (Heavy Duty - 400 lb. Capacity)

Engineered to support up to 400 lbs while keeping the frame incredibly light, the Carbon HD uses a "stroller-style" uncollapsing motion designed for maximum structural rigidity.

  • To Unfold:

    1. Stand directly behind the wheelchair.

    2. Firmly grab the top backrest/push-handle area.

    3. Push the handle outward away from you (exactly like uncollapsing a high-end baby stroller).

    4. The frame will extend outward and snap into place. Check the locking mechanism beneath the seat to ensure the safety pin is fully engaged.

  • To Fold:

    1. Flip back the footplate and locate the release latch positioned toward the back of the unit underneath the seat.

    2. Pull the release latch to break the frame tension.

    3. Lean the chair slightly back on its anti-tip wheels and push the backrest and seat together until it clicks into its locked, folded position.
